The trial match of junior players in the Wair&rape, arranged by the Union, w&» a success, strong teams from th« Worth and South diatnois meeting' at G»eytown on Saturday. A full fifteen was s<>nt away from which, although not the y Strongest, w&a a fairly representative one. The game was not storied till »f trly four o'clock, and only thirtyfive mincte spelts were played. Mr B, Malcolm was chosen ri-furee, and Messrs W*-Ich and Udy umpires. Eton captained the North, and Maguiie the South team. The South fifteen wsw exceptionally strong, including picked men from the ' Grey town, Muagarakei. Finite and Fire Brigade Cluta, while the North were only represented by the Star and Musters ton Clubs. The ground was in excel leut condition, and e. very fast game waa witnessed. From '.he start South played on the aggressive, and made the timet very lively for their opponents. The backs of the South were exceptionally strong, and it whs hard work to keep them from scoring, Jackson, a very fast three-quarter, waa the first to get over the line, and he deserved it, for he ran from nearly half way, passing the whole of the opposing backs in fine style. The itry was not Converted, the first spell "Piping in a lead for South r.t two pofott to nil. In the necond spoil, tb.B play was even foster than the iirat, and it was a great; wonder moro scoring was not done. Merewood, by fast'following up, and through the North back being out of his place, scored the only try, bringing the total up to four points. The winners played by far the best gams, their backs especially shining. Faulkner played a brilliant game, and ia St for any senior team. He runs atrongly and fast, kicks welt, and collars admirably, and his play generally ia good. Maguire also played a rattling game, s.nd Kemble as full was very safe. Amos, Beard, and Merewood were the best of the forward division, although others were con. ; epiououß throughout the game. For : the losers Hansen and Richards (the . peksd emergency men) played far and i away the best, the former especially ; ahining. Willie Karaitiana was the . only three-quarter who did aoytbinq, | fathers beißg decidedly "off color." : forwards were the saving portion, < majority playing a tip-top game, ' Sim#ca, Ksmmer and Butement be- j ing about the beet. ] Greytown spectators ate noted for 1 their " one-sided " partiality on a i football field, and on Saturday last j they faithfully uphold their unenviable ( reputation. Throughout the game a t teniae "barracking " was carried on t for the South team, the poor North- t erneni being entirely neglected. I t was very sorry to notice on two or f three occasions if the referee man- 'J aged to give his decision against their a favorites, the crowd indulged in < cowaraiy hooting. This is to be re- 1 grafted, as it generally provokes rough c play, noticeable in several instances f on Sstmr&sy, and shows very bad ] taste on the part of the on-lookers. e
Aa interesting match is to be played in Grey town next Saturday, between teams of married and single soois&tSew, Strong representatives "SslgSiS been ehoaen, and a dinner is to all players by the losers. The afSs|jr& creating a lot of interest in the Lower Yallny, and both parties are confidmut of success. Several veterans who h»ve not donned the jemy tot jmrs are to shine on this oeeaelotl.
