The trial match of junior players in the Wairarapa, arranged by the Union, was a success, strong teams from the North and South districts
meeting at Gioytown on Saturday, A full fifteen was sent away from fMasterion, which, although not the strongest, was a fairly representative one. The game was not started till nearly four o'clock, and only thirtyfive minute spells were played. Mr R. Malcolm was chosen referee, and Messra Welch and Udy umpires. Eton captained the North, and Muguire ths South team, Tho South fifteen was exceptionally strong, inoluding picked men from the ' Grey town, Mungarakei, Pirate and Fire Brigade Clubs, while tho North wore only represented by the Star and Master-, ton Clubs. The ground was in excellent condition, and a very fast game was witnessed. From tho start South played on the aggressive, and made the times very lively for their opponents. The backs of the South were exceptionally strong, and it whb hard work to kocp them from scoring. Jackson, ft very fast three-quarter, was the first to jet over tho line, and he deserved it, for ho ran from nearly
half way, passing the whole of the opposing backs in fino style, The to was not converted, the first spell in a lead for South nt two points to nil, In the necond spell, the play was oven faster than the first, and it was a great wonder nioro scoring was not done. Mcrewood, by fast following up, and through the North back being out of his place, scored tbe only try, bringing tho total up to four points, The winners played by far the best game, their backs especially shining, Faulknerplayedahrilliantgame, andis fit for any senior team, He runs strongly and fast, kicks well, and collars admirably, and his play generally is good. Maguiro also played a rattling game, and Komble as full was very safe. Amos, Beard, and Merewood were tbe best of the forward division, although others were conspicuous throughout the game, For the losers Hansen and Richards (the picked emergency men) played far and away the beat, tho former especially shining. Willie Karaitiana was the only throe-quarter who did anything, the others being decidedly " off color." «i forwards were the saving portion, majority playing a tiptop game, Simeon, Summer and Butement being about tho best,
Greylown spectators are noted for their " one-Bided" partiality on a football field, and on Saturday last they faithfully upheld their unenviable reputation, Throughout the game ut terrific" barracking " was carried on for the South team, tho poor Northerners being entirely neglected, I was very sorry to notico on two or three occasions if the referee managed to give his decision against their favorites, the crowd indulged in cowardly hooting. This is to be regretted, as it generally provokesrough play, noticeable in several instances on Saturday, and shows very bad taste on the part of the on-lookers,
An interesting match is to be played in Greytowu next Saturday,
between teams of worried and single footballers. Strong representatives y .rWe been chosen, and a dinner is to Tegiventoallplayiis by the losers, The affair is creating a lot of interest in the Lower Valhy, and both parties are confidunt of success. Several veterans who bare not donned the jersey for years are to sbino on this occasion. A, and B. junior teams havo beeu chosen for the practice match at Masterton on Saturday next, after which tbe final selection will be made to represent tbe Wairarapa against Wellington in about three weeks time. We have some really splendid material to choose from if only party feeling is abolished by the Match Committee, ~ It was stated on Saturday night that a trial fifteen bad been picked and only lour of North Wairarapa included, This, I understand, is not a fact, the team not being picked until next week. An incident occurred during the progress of the football match at lireytown on Saturday wbioh greatly •lunused tho spectators, and showed what presence of mind will do in a moment of peril! The play was near the Bouthern line, about the only time North looked liko scoring, when one of their three-quarters very cleverly marked in close proximity to the goal. The skipper immediately infringed the rules by taking tho ball from the marker for a place kiok, and a terrific ory of" rush him" went up from the barrackers. In the twinkling of an eye, a wag yelled out from tho field " What about the new rules?" and before the situation was taken in, tbe ball was placed, and a poster registered, It was a clever" bluff," and nearly won the match.
There is a probabality of a matoh between teams representing the WajrVapaand B.ush Rugby' pniojis taking place at an early date.
Tho ma'ch between the Masterton and Rival Clubs will not bo played jfext Saturday on aocount of the Married versus Binglo game nt Greytown,
Tho final match for the Junior Cap between the Masterton anil Star Clubs is being put of by the Union, and considerable dissatisfaction is expressed by the players interested. If tho match was arranged for next Saturday, it would bo the best possible practice (he aspirants to the Junior representative team could obtain.
In tho Senior Championship matches at Wellington ■on (Saturday, the Ponekea defeated the Melrose by seven points to nil. The match between Petone and tho Athletics resultod in a ftin for the formor by four points to
Id the fofltbalfmijtcb Auckland V, Thames, the former won by sixteen points to seven.
