ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.
Meeting of Parishioners,
The annual meeting of parishioners of St Matthew's waß held in the schoolroom, Masterton, lut (Tuesday) evening; Owing to the inclemency of the weather the attendance was meagre, The chair was occupied by tho Bev W, E, Paige, The report for the year, which had been circulated among the parishioners, was accepted aa read, The Chairman apologised for the absence of Mr C. E. Brenner. The reportof the (Jhurch-wardens had, he said, been oiroulated, and was lairly satisfactory, There was very littlo difference in the finances from last year, In some cases the expenditure was less, They had to thank the ladies for the sum of £SO, contributed to the general fund. The offertories had fallen off £lO, which was no doubt due to the baa weather, He found that in many cases members of the Uhurch were absent for weeks and when they returned they did not contribute for the time they were absent, He thought the object of the oQertorioß was thus lost sight of, With regard, to the pew rents, there was a moral obligation resting upon those attending tho Church to assist in this direction. He considered it would be advisable lo have the pew rents paid in advance. A sum of £lO had been collected by a lady of the Church, which wonld form the nucleus of a fund for additions to the Church. During the year the services of an efficient organist had been secured. He had no doubt the choir would benefit by the instruction of Mr Clifford, Mrs Paige's health and aj>e had rendered it necessary for a change. The ohoir was now much improved, The thanks of the parishioners were especially due to those gentlemen who had assisted in the choir, although it was unfortunate that the practices were not moro systematic, He hoped the singing would still further improve, He had to return his' sincere thanks to Mr Jackson, who had acted as lay reader, The parish was indebted to this gentleman for his services, He also thanked most heartily all the ladies qt the Sunday School, who were taking a most active interest in their worjf, and those ladieß who had assisted in the Toy Fair, whioh produced £SO, In conclusion he thanked the choir and those who had assisted $t the winter evening entertainments, together with the Church Warden, Vestry, and Secretary, He would formally movo the adoption of the report.
