SMOKE CONCERT.
The visitors were entertained at a smoke concert in the Club Hotel in the ovening, when about sixty persons sat down to a most excellent spread provided by Host Elkimi, The chair was occupied by Mr C, A. Pownall, who was supported by the captains of the respective teams, Tho evening was devoted to speechifying and harmony, any monotony which may have been connected with the former being more than relievod by the joviality of the latter, Songs wore rondered by Messrs Clifford, Iggulden, McKenzio, T. H, Thompson, Beattie and Booth, Mr Clifford accompanying on the piano. Several pretty selections were also rendered by Messrs Russell and Eton on tho banjo and mandolin. Tho toast list was as follows :—" The Queen," proposed by the Chairman; "The Visiting Team," proposed by Mr D'Arcy and responded to by Mr A. Bayly; "The Home Team," proposed by Mr Lusk and responded to by Mr Beattie; " Kindred Sports," proposed by the Chairrann and responded to by Mr E, M. D. Whatman; " The Ladies," proposed by Mr Lusk and responded to by Mr Cargill; "The Press," proposed by Mr Iggulden and responded to by Mr A. Vile; " Mine Host," proposed by the Chairman and responded to by Mr Elking; "The Referee," proposed by Mr D'Arcy and responded to by the Chairman. During the evening the health of Mr E. M. D. Whatman, who baß juat retired from the football arena, was drunk in bumpers, The proceedings were brought to a close jjy the hearty singing of" auld Lang Syne.' 1 GENERAJj NOTES, Tho Pahiatua team did not turn up to play their match wfth Eketahuna, The Eketahuna team went out to the field and kicked a goal and claimed the match. Woodvillo playedTutaekara on tho latter's ground on Saturday, winning by six points (three tries) to nil. Tutaekara had a very weak team. It is a pity the Tutaekara boys don't stick together mora Bnd play a more combined game; had they done so on Saturday they would havo given Woodvillo a stiff go foni; ' A fifteen has been picked from Eketahuna and Tutaokara to play ejghteen from the' Northern Clubs at Pahiatua on Saturday next from which a team will be picked to represent tlje Bush Union. The football match, Queensland v. New South Wales, resulted in a victory for tho former by twelvo points to love, East Cbristchurch beat Merivale on Saturday by one goal (five points) to ' nil, and therefore won the Championship, *
