An Important Betting Judgment, (United Press Association.) Dukedin, July 22. An important decision re betting was given to day in the case on appeal against the decision of Mr Carew, R.M., in the case of Police v Barnett, who was found guilty of gambling by laying totalisator odds, Mr Justice Williams said he was not prepared to follow the case of Porter v O'Connor. If accused had conducted a totalisator without a license he would bronght himself within seoiion l{v but he did nothing of the sort, What " he did waß to lay bets at totalisator odds. , Now there was nothing illegal in making a bet or giving odds. If the parties were not able to agree as to the odds, he saw no reason why they should iiot, withoutbreaking tho law, reßort to ohance for the parpose of determining what the odds were to be, Innooasecan such transaction bo a scheme by which prizes of money are to be competed for. Each ibet is a distinct transaction. A bet lis a contract, though not enforced at law; andaoontraetwithone person had no connection at all with one made with another person, The conviotion was quashed, but no costs would be allowed.
