MARTINBOROUGH NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent),

Knowincf that many of your readers take an interest; in the doings of the devotees of Terpsichore, I have committed to paper an account of the Bachelors' Ball that took place here on the 15th inst. It is fast becoming a pleasant memory, and we feel it our grateful duty to write about the gallantry of the bachelors of the district in providing the most popular amusement at 'this season of the year, The moving spirits in the affair weri, 1 believe, Messrs J. Oamp- 1 bell, R, Thomas, W, Miller and 0, Lawrie, They certainly deserve the tiiankb of those who Imd tho pleasure of being present, for they provided an excellent . evening's amusement gratituously to all sundry, except of course tho bachelors of the district, who were expected to contribute their •juota to defray expenses. Ihe promoters not only provided it free of charge, but they also engaged tho Grey town Palace, drag lor tho convenience of visitor; from a dist anco, There is ono little episodein the return journoy of the abovenamed conveyance that is worth recording. Its occupants, I believe, numbered eleven of thfr fair sex, and three of the sterner, Ono of the latter is not unknown to literary fame. I noticed when taking up the rear position all the occupants got out and walkod, I at first conoluded, owing to the frosty simoaphere, that they did to voluntarily to keep up circulation, but on iiurtber enquiry found that this was not the case, for at each incline it appeared to have to be repeated, On observation the quadrupeds appeared to be suffering from what a parson's horse is said to suffer from, all gallop and no oats, However, I believe they reached their destination safely, even if they did have to make a free use ofsbanks'" pony.

To resume the critique on the hall, in the evolution of this as in all entertainments that minister to our enjoyment, the ladies took a leading part and inspired all those efforts that contributed to the artistic and material; sucpesH of the ball in question. To the administrative capacity and artistic ability of' one of the leading ladies in any movemont, whether for the promotion of Church, State, • or amusement, and to the kindness of those ladies who assisted her, is mainly due the success of the danco, The gaunt and unsightly interior of the building was transformed, into a blaze of light with Chinese lanterns and well-liijbted Tlie wa " B w? peatly decorated with pyergreons, and tbe suppej: wag alftjiat could b'e desired, The programme 'consisted of four dances, with several extras. The latter were played by Miss Eva Nation. The music was excellent, When we mention that Mr McLean presided at the piano; assisted with cornet and. piccolo, it is a guarantee that it was firstclass. 1 might mention tliafc tho pippipf jn one dance played both tbe piiinoanil'cijrnet, Showing hif proficiency as a miisioian. I know 'the ladies would be disappointed if' their names did not appear in print, so I append below a few of tliose who Certajnly Iq'oM particularly nice, They were the' jl. 'Wakelin, R Nation, A, Leach, Orpot and 'Smith. Although it was supposed Jo be a fancy dress' ball, none of tjie ladies'woje i fancy dresses, and only about eight gents. All of the latter looked well, and made a pleasant diversion from being in plain dress, Mr R, Thomas fulfilled the duties of M,C. satisfactorily.
