FOOTBALL.

[By Diogenes,]

A very good practice was held on Saturday between twelve probables and fifteen passible?, and although the scoring was heavy an even game resulted. Some excellent form was shown by individual players, and the chances of Wairarapa against Taranaki went up 60 per cent in the eyes of the spectators. D 1 Aroy potted one goal, and placed another, MoKenzie scored three tries, and T. Welch two, making in all 21 points to their opponents, 9.' Barstow and'Butement did the scoring for the possibles, Very few players turned up from the Lower Valley, which is to be regretted, as it does not give the Match Committee a proper chance to judge the ineiits of the players,.

D'Aroy played by far the best back game, hi; wonderful kicking being much admired. He placed one beautiful jjoal from the half-way flag, and drop-kicked another. He is certainly the main stay of the baok division,

McKenzieshone very conspicuously all through the game, and made some dashing runs. His play has improved a lot of late, and he is now one of the most likely scorers -in the team. Am sorry to see his'twinbrother Eagle left out of the fifteen, but 1 understand that business engagements will not allow him to play on Saturday.

De Joux and Harry Perry are a fine pair of halves, and will make things merry. Perry is improving every game. De Joux is well up in every point of the game, and feeds his three>-quarters excellently. Booth played a safe open game as three" quarter, but I fancy it is a mistake putting him close to the scrum. Tommy Thompson, a sterling little player, and a most consistent niau, deserves the place.

A. Cameron aud Iggulden played well, and I am rather surprised that neither should gain n place in the team. H. Welch is the maiden rep. and is worthy of the position.

The Masterton Club contributes seven players to the rep, team this year, Stars four, and Rivals four.

The Secretary of the Union is endeavouring to obtain the services of Mr Syd. Nicholls, ofGroytown, for the big match as referee. A man moro fitted for the position could not he found, -

The following team has been finally chosen as representatives oi Wairarapa to do battle against Taranaki on Saturday next: Baok, D'Aroy; J, B. Thompson, C. Perry, M'Carty; I H. Perry, Booth, De Joux; Forwards—McKenzie, Watsou, Gray, Hudson, T. and H, Weloli, Tyler, Malcolm. Emergencies, T. Thompson, Wallace, Iggulden and Moore.

The above players are requested to attend the Gymnasium as often during this week as possible, as the very best of form will be necessary to keep up the reputation of the Wairarapa,

The Junior players of the North aud South Wairarapa will play a match at Greytown on July 80th, to enable the match Committee to piok a team to represent Wairarapa against W ellingion next month, The following play for the North: Emmett,. Broad, Karaitiana, Jackson, Agnew, Eton, Wrigley, Simeon, Yates, Kangi, Chambers, Blinkhorne, Butement, Emergencies: Richards, Tuobi, Wellington and Munday,

The match between the Masterton second fifteen and the Mungaraki Bovtrs, played on Saturday, resulted in a win for the former by four points to nil. The Stars and Masterton are still on even terms for the JuniorCup, aud the result of the final will be watched with interest.

The representative match between the Wairarapa and Taranaki Unions, to be played on the Park Oval on Saturday next, is causing a good deal of interest in football circles. The local team will play in ihe Masterton Club's colore, and the game will start at 2,80 p.m. The team chosen to do battle for our district is being adversely criticised by a great number of enthusiasts, but to pick a team to pleaee everybody is utterly impossible, McCarty's inclusion in the team seems to be the bone of discontent, and I certaiuly think men who have turned up to praotipe consistently should have been placed before him. He may, however, surprise us on Saturday; we hope he will | In my opinion tbe team as a body is a wellchosen one, and ought to give a good account of themselves,

It is stated that Taranaki will be able to send away tbe strongest team the Union has ever placed in the field, and that is Baying a great deal. Frank Smith, who played for the Athletic Club last year, "Bob" Liielt and "Bab" MoKenzie, both welN known Auckland players, areincluded in the team,

The visitors will be entertained at a Smoke Concert on the evening after the.match, and be driven round the district on Sunday.' They are likely to have a good reception here, as'the local jnen are loud in ilieir praises as to the they received wjjen visiting Taranaki some years since,

Chocolate and wbito (the colors of the Taranaki team) are to decorate the reception drag in streamers and rosettes on Saturday morning when the team arrives.

A meeting of-the Bush Rugby Uriiop was held at Pahijttua on Saturday night, the following delegates being presentWoodville, '* Mesffs Mann and Darley; Tutaekara, Messrs Bodmin and Meyer; Eketahuna, Messrs F, Pellipg and Hart. Pabiatua was noli represented, Mr F. Pellipg was voted 1 to tjie cfiaip. Mr parley acted 'fia 'Secretary, m lw, ro the i abseppe of Mr (Jodfrey, A protest entered by Pahiatua' agajpafc the Tutgekaya pnatpji was npt upheld, owing to Pahiatua being unrepre* sented at the meeting. The following gjntlemen were appointed to act as refereesWoodville vi Pahiatua, Mr Mann j Eketahnns r, Pahiatua, Mr Godfrey; Elrelahuna v. Tutaekara, Mr Keebley; Woodville v. Tutaekara, MrH. Bodmin. It was decided to play a matoh at Pahiatua on Saturday week between teams picked from the norili and-south bush districts, idea was mooted to for competition by Junior teams. It was decided fhgt all membp of clubs should play In their proper colours in Gup matclies;

The Eketahuna Club is making arrangements to play the Melrose Club (Wellington) before the end the season. : , The Taranaki "reps " have abandoned- their intention of playing at Wellington on Tuesday week, being unable to obtain the required leave.
