MASTERTON,-FRIDAY, (Before Colonel Roberts, li.Jf.) drunk. A first offender was fined 5s and 2s costs for being drunk in a public place, DESTITUTE children, Michael, David, Patrick, Mary, and Jglon Miilcnby all under the ag« ef ocen years were committed to Si. Mary's Industrial School, Nelson, by His Worship on the application ol the police, the children being utterly dtsti* tute. Their mother is contincd in n lunalio asylum and the father too ill to work for their support. LIOE IN SHEEP. R, Tankcrsloy pleaded guilty to having exposed sheep infected with lice for sale in Messrs Lowes and lorns sale yards in May last. Fined il with costs lOa PROSECUTION UNDER THE EDUCATION ACT. Charles Bsntley was charged by the Mastorton School Committed with neglecting to send to school two of bis children between the ages of 7 and 14 years, Mr Beard, who appeared for the prosecution explained to tho Court that it had become necessary to take action as a warniog to parents, and that while not wishing to deal harshly with tlio present ensos (in future the Act would be strictly jtftnplied with, A penalty of 40s could bo imposed by tho Court in each case, but it was not desired on this occasion. Mr Bentley he believed admitted the offence and pleaded that the children played truant, hut this could not be accepted as an excuse, as parents must see that children do not play truant. Charles Buntley admitted the offence, His Worship made an order that the children attend school. No fine was inflicted, but costs amounting to 78, John Jacobs, similarly charged, placed certificates with the Court to show that his children were unable to attend school through illness. SI r Beard said that no notice had been nent to the officers of the school, Defendant was therefore liable as he ought previously to havo explained that the children wers ill. His Worship warned the defendant and dismissed the case, accepting the plea that sickness prevented the cliil attendance,
