House of Repiwntatiues, WEDNESDAY, JULY 18. The House met at 2.80 p,m. REPLIES TO QUESTIONS. Tbo Eon. Minister for Public Works, replying to Mr .Earnsbaw, read the statement of the Railway Commissioners as follows:-" It is not true that the ' silent system,' or any other system is being carried out in the railway workshops at Hillside. 1 ' To a further question by Mr Eamshaw, alleging that coercion was being employed at Hillside to get employed to deny the existence of tbo silent system, the Minister replied that he would cause further inquiries to be made of the Bailway Commissioners, ' In reply to Sir John Hall, the Hon. Premier stated that the amount oi floating debt still outstanding is £450,000. The Hon, Premier, replying to Mr George Hutchison, stated (1) that the amount of the 81 per cent, conversion loan, 1891, actually sold to the public at latest advices was £325,05214s 6d; (2) the total amount received and credited to date in the hooks of the Treasury as the proceeds of such sales was £249,45318s 6d; (3) the balance in respect of such sales to the credit of the public accouut in London is £24,025 6s sd, iflE railway Commissioners. Mr O'Conor asked a question standing in his name as fpllowa; Whether the Government willtake steps to provide employees' trains to and from the principal centres of employment to carry working people 'o and from their work morning and evening, at prices hot exceeding 2d for five miles, 4d for ten miles and 6d .for fifteen miles, including returns? | .
