THE BROKEN HILL STRIKE.
The Strike at Broken Hill. . [united press association,] Sydney, July 11. The Secretary of the Miners' Association states that the owners have definitely refused to hold a conference regarding the state of affairs at Broken Hill, and the men will shortly issue an appeal to the working men of Australia to support their action. 1 Tho owners also intend to-issue a statement, setting forth reasons, in favour of tho contract system'. '' July:i2,, The mine owners in their statement, say that in extending the principle of Btoping by contmfc they have no desire to do any injustice to the men, nor do they-wish that any of their employees should receive less than a fair day's wage. The immediate cause of trouble, the owners assert, is the demand, that all the miners Bhould receive one rate of pay, irrespective of the, work they do, which allows an energetic workman to earn no mora than an incompetent one.
