MEETING OF HORSE OWNERS.

Railway Horn Boxes.

A meeting of horse owners to consider the question of ; ; the charges mado for horse boxes on the Welling-ton-Masterton railway, was held in the Masterton Club Hotel on Saturday last, Mr James Btuckey in the chair,

Mr W. Harcock, the convenor, stated that at present the rates charged for horse boxes on the Government railways were prohibitive. They should have such concessions made as. would enable them to travel their horses in the district and out of it. At present the charge for taking a horse to Wellington was J3lßs lid each way, and the fare of an attendant 18s Id. If a horse was to travel from Masterton to Wellington seven times in a season it would cost £2l h 7d for boxes. He thought the attendant of horses should go free and that boxes should he allowed horse-owners for Bay £lO for seven trips. The Commissioners had the boxes and they were lying idle. He would propose that a requisition be drawn up for presentation to the Commissioners praying for a reduction of the oharges for horsn boxes, the (commissioners to be waited upon by a deputation, with a member for the district.

Mr A, W. Cave thought the oharges for conveying horses to Wellington were at present too high. Mr Gray was of opinion that a reduction in freight would enable Wairarapa horse owners to exhibit in Wellington.

Mr Falloon agreed that a reduction was necessary, . Mr Hercook thought entire horses should be taxed,

Mr Gayfer explained that 1 reductions were now made for travelling at show times,

Mr Falloon thought reductions should be made for mares.

The Chairman agreed with the objects of the meeting. He said that at Home concessions were made for stallions and broodmares,

After some discussion a deputation consisting of the Chairman arid Mr Heroock was appointed to wail upon the Commissioners, in company with Mr Buchanan, M. H. R„ to ask for the concessions indicated by the convenor. ■ ; ~ :" The meeting then adjourned,
