Defeat of a Minister, Summary of Return, [By Telegraph.—Press Association.] London, July 8. M, Carvell, a Nationalist, \m been elected for the Borough of Newry, Mr J.lkM'L'arthy's old seat, Sr J. \V. Benn, a Home Ruler, defeated the Right Hon. C. T. Kitchio, President of the local Government board and member of the Cabinet, at Si. George's in the East (Tower Hamlets), by a majority of 898. Mr Bobs, a Tory, beat Mr Juitin M'Oartby, senr., at Londonderry, where Mr M'Carlhy had only a of one at the last general election. Mr Hammond, who beaded the poll at Newcastle, is said to have owed his election to pothouse iuflaence, as he is interested in no less than 700 public bouses scattered ovor England. The Daily Chronicle says that popular sympathy will be with the Bight Hon. John Morley, who has six times previously defeated Mr Hammond, The result was quite unexpected. The net result so far is that the Liberals hare gained 21 Beats, The Daily News says that the Liberals are inspired with renewed lil'Daily Telegraph considers that the issue is still doubtful, but that all will depend on how the counties go. There have been 801,572 votes re-; corded for opponents of Home Rule up to date, 918,525 for Home Bulerr, and 24,678 for Labour Candidates. The returns to date give-Conser-vatives, 141; Unionists 19; Liberals, 117; Nationalists, 11, . ■The Trades Unionistfl keenly resented Mr Motley's opposition to an eight hours system, and their hostility is, believed tp have had some influence pti the Newcastle election. Mr Glaustone, speaking at West Calder, said he m willing to support a proposal to abolish special representation for the Universities.
