The Sydenham Licensing Appeal Case.

Christchurcp, July 7. A motion for a writ of certiorari quashing tbe proceedings of the Sydonham Licensing Committee concerning tbe refusal to renew the license of the Lancaster Park Hotel came before Mr Justice Denmston in banco to-day. Messrs Fisher, Harper and Stringer appeared for T. Quill, tbe licensee, and Mr Caygill appeared for tbe Committee. Tbe counsel for tlie applicant said they were prepared iq piakp the cagp a test pnp to goyerp the pases pf other two hotels. Tbey Stturd that four members Committee were incapable opilfelipg the application judicially on account of hjap, and that tbey had not decided according to law. Mr Caygill said the Supreme Court had no power to interfere with a licensing committee which had been invested by the Legislature with special powers and bad noted honestly within these powers, The argument is riot yet finished. During the argument Mr, Justice Denniston said that the Court of Appeal had not revetted the principle of his judgment that the Licensing Act was not ut Prohibition Act, and the Committeo.were bound to consider the requirements of persons who desired to purchase drink,
