THE CHICAGO EXHIBITION. The Minister for Public Works informer Mr Wilson that he would
shortly give the House an opportunity of giving an opinion as to sending New Zealand manufactures to the Chicago Exhibition.
FOREIGN TIMBER, Replying to Mr Houston, the Minister for Public Works stated that since September 25th, 1891, 1043 cubic feet of New South Wales iron hark, valued at £144 14s, had been imported for railway works, and the Railway Commissioners also informed him that various shipments of timber had beeti received during the year. GOVERNSIENT PRINTING OFFICE, The Minister for Public Works informed Mr Buick that the question of firo escapes and lighting for the Government Printing Office was under consideration; MIDLAND RAILWAY, In reply to Mr Guinness, the Minister for Public Works said the Government did not intend to take the initiative in regard to the Midland Railway Company's proposals. The Premier informed MrMcGuiro thatastheiewasa likelihood of the bonus offered for the manfacture of salt, being obtained, the Government did not consider it advisable to remove the duty on salt. OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY. In reply to Mr Dawson, the Minister for Public Works said that of the .£30,000 allocated last year to the Olago Central Railway £15,000 was to be spent this year; of that amount £11,587 was actually expended, and liabilities amounting' to £B9OO incurred up to tho 30th June. PRIVILEGE. Mr George fisher brought beforo tho House a question of privilege. In a speech in public on Monday night a Minister of the Grown had said, " Before he sat down he would first say it was not the intention of the Government to enforce on a resolution, but if they found their power in Parliament gone they would not be content to cling to office and sit helplessly on the Government benches, but fearlessly seek an appeal to tho people for new power and an equal strength to do the people's work," He moved that the passage be read by the Clerk of tho House.—The motion was lost on the voices.
