A deadlock occurred.in the Masterton B.M, Cqurt this morning, A Maori named Haneta Anaru appeared to answer a claim upon a judgment sum' mom, but as he could not uuderstand English the ease could not be proceeded with. Mr Bunny, who appeared for the plaintiff, submitted that an interpreter should have been provided by tho Court, Colonel Roberts, R.M., replied that the ' parties to the action should have brought their own interpreter. Mr Bunny re«. totted that it was a vicious Act which re-*,' quired such a thing. The system was open to abuse unless ait interpreter was provided by both parties to the action, Colonel Boberts intimated that he would adjourn the case from time to time until an interpreter was present. A difficulty - then arose as to how the defendant was to be informed that the case was adjuurned, After a lengthy "korero," in wbioh Haneta declared that he did not under, stand a word of what was being said, Mr Bunny satished the Court by telljM the defendant .in a sort of pigeop.jßnese that he had better pay up.and hffwould not be required to again appear.
