The next of the aeries of winter entertainments in 'connection with St. Matthew's Chinch, Masterton, has been fixed for Tuesday, Julyl2tH. On ihis occasion the principal feature will be a very interesting and instructive lecture, illustrated by lime-light views, entitled "Life in the Pacifio Islands" and "Scenery and Industries of the West Coast." The first subject will deal with the lecturer, Mr W. Rawnsloy's, travels iu the Paoifio, and the second with his recent experiences on the West Coast of New Zealand, showingho.v wo get our coal and (riving an insight into gold mining, sluicing, etc, Songs by somo of our leading amateurs will be given at intervals, so that the entertainment promises to be, upon the whole, a very good one indeed, and should attract a large audience. A witness in the Mastorton fi.M. Court yeßterday'refused to be sworn in the customary way, because he was of the Jewish-persuasion.' At first the usual oath was administered and the witness placed his hat upon his head, This did not satisfy cuunsel, |and the words" So help your Ood" were altered to "Bo help yaur Jehovah," In taking the Becond oath the witness removed his hat, and he was promptly intimated that this was not proper. A' third and final effort was then made to • administer the oath and the business of the Court was proceeded with.'
