WELLINGTON JOTTINGS.
(By Our 0m Cormpondint),
Tuesday. Comparatively little publio interest f"' has yet. been. aroused here over matters political,... At. present every, thing is in the undeveloped stage, and the proceedings in Ihe House have not risen above the dull dead level of an uninteresting debateonal'flat, stale, and unprofitable" subject—the Ad-dress-in-Reply, The debate was only relieved from absolute stagnation by the pungent oriticisms of Mr Scobie MacKeuzta and the boisterous badioage of the burly fiuckUnd, Mr McLean, In moving the Address-in-Biply, was the essence of prosiness, and his strongly-marked Scotch accent considerably detracts from the fow graces of oratory he possesses, The Leader of the Opposition (Mr fiolleston)- was- as ponderous as ever, and rapidly'reduced the House to a state o] ennui, ' » The debate'is being, contiuued today, and is now likely to last till the end of the week, when it is hoped that business will commence in earnest, None of the seleot committees have yet been set up, and until this is done the real business of the session will not.be commenced.. Our legislators' have plenty of work' before '(hem'Vgi there are no less than Billsoctheorderpappr., Tljenumber of petitions ■' this year also js very large aqd the Public Petitions'Cpm> raises wijl therefore have their Hands pretty full. •■■■ •:.■ '.. ,;: :■-.':
' The Gbverho'r's'LeveVon Saturday was the most numerously attended funOtion of its bind that has ever been held in Wellington, and is pretty con.
elusive evidence of the faot that Lord Glasgow has already leapt into publio approbation. The arrangements at Government House were also excellent, tbe crowding, pushing, and struggling so noticeable on former occasions being conspicuous by their 1.
Great preparations are in progtoßS for tlio Citizen's Ball to Lord and Lady Gtagow to-morrow evening, and no efforts are being spared to make it an unqualified success. The decorations are of a most elahorat p nature. The floor of the Garrison Hull lias been planed, aud a detachment of the Naval Brigade has been bttuily enyai{».d in polishing it tor some evenings past. A «upj>er room is being erected at the rear of tlio Hall in order that there shall be plenty of room for the, dancers, Considerable disappomt'iiHnt is, however, felt that so few of the young men of Wlington will be present on account of ihe high price oburgetl for tickets. The decision of the Committee to publish a list of Daces of those taking tickets has also caused a feeliug of irritation. There is no doubt the Committee has made a gnat mistake in :making the admission so high, for a lower charge would have ensured a larger attendance, and even less possibility of call upon the guarantors. "The real facts of the case are that young men m Wellington have so many calls upon their purees during the session that it is a matter of difficulty to make ends meet, and they say that in this instance their pockets should have been considered a little,
Socially the next weak or so will be very lively. Last night that accomplished pianist Miss Alice Sydney Burvettdrewa large and attimtiv audience to the Opera House to Ilea her final recital, Wednesday is the night of the much-talked of Citizens' Ball, and on Thursday the Thespian Club is to perform "Allthat Glitters is not Gold" at the Opera House. As ell the performers are well-known herein social circles, a large and fashionable audience may be expected. The performance is in aid of the Orchestral Society, and a* the whole of the Society's orchestral strength to the number of forty are to perform selections between the acts, .■•
very attractive entertainment should be the result. Oil Tuesday, 6th July, the Thorndon Tennis fljlf will hold " a lawn improvement dance " at Thomas' Booms; and Lady Glasgow gives her first dance at Government House on the evening of the 7th. I understand that it is the intention of the Govern ment House people to give a series of " Small and early " dances during the sessien instead of two or three big " crushes" which nobody really en„ joys and where dancing with any degree of comfort or safeiy is quite out of the question, The Star Boating Club's Annual Ball comes off on the loth July, and will no doubt as usual be a brilliant success. The Hunt Club will most probably give a Hunt Dance | very shortly also, so there is gaiety galore ahead for those who delight in these things.
