,MASTERTON.-SATURDAY. — (Before Colonel Roberts, E.IM.) ALLEGED LAEOENV. Thomas Cordue wan charged on the information of James Sillars, secondhand dealer, with the larceny of a U note. James Sillars, on oath, deposed - that the accused went into bia shop yesterday with a watch, and asked what he could get upon it. Witness replied that he could not give mart than a pound. Tbs accused took the pound and put it in his pocket, Wit" neas then told him bo could recover his watch for 22s Cd, The accused asked him for a receipt, which witness refused to give. Corduo then picked up the watch from the counter and said," If you do not give me a receipt you don't get the watch," Witness replied," Alright, give me the pound back, there's no barm done." The accused ernjled nnd, asked,'" What pound?" Witness replied, "The pound you have in your pocket, the found Ijust gave you." fle said he . id gpt no pound, and walked out of iheshop. ' ' '' ' llio accused sworp, .stated that be went in to Mr Sillars' shop and asked i»bathe conic) get on his watch until tjj'e" rflornipg, 'Mr' Sillars said 'h'o would give him a pound, and taking ' the watch in his hand put it tip (obis oar to see if it was going. Witness asked Sillars what ho wanted for the pound till the morning, and be replied 2s fid, and if he had it longer ss, Witness said be only wanted it till the QioroiDg, and asked for a receipt,
Sillars replied that it wasinoie than his shop was worth to give a receipt; Witness then picked up the watch and walked out 61 tho shop. Sillara followed him and said he bad picked up the pound with the watch. Witness relied that he had not,. but if he thought he had ho could search him, Ho was afterwards arrested. Tho Bench dismissed the information.
