The announcement of the Wairarapa Hunt Club's Annual Ball, which is to be held in the Falaoo Hall, Grevtown, on Friday, 22nd July, appears in our amusement column to-day, This is the first dance given under these auspices, and we havo every reason to believe that it will prove not only a larne gathering but a very great success. The customary weekly mooting of tho Masterton Mutual Improvement Society was held in tho Wesloyan schoolroom last evening. The President (llev J Dukes) occupied the oliair, and there was a farce attendance. A debate, " Is Co-operation mure adapted to promote the well-being of mankind than competition ?" formed the business of tho evening, in which Mr Baumber led ci; in tbe affirmative, and Mr 0. £. Daniell the negative. Co-operation was supported by Messrs Heyhoß, Steel and whilo competition hsd for its supMessrs Easthope, Gillespie, and 0, Pragnell, The debate was very animating, at the conclusion of which the chairman impartially summed up and a voto was taken resulting in both sides securing an even number of votes Tho chairman gave co-operation the bonefit of his casting voto. At next Friday's meeting "Music and Elocution" will occupy the attention of tho Society, and a good programme may be looked forward to.
