GOVERNMENT LIFE INSURANCE.
Business oj the Year 1891,
A statement of the business transacted by the Government Life Insurants Department ol New Zealand for the year 18911 ms just reached us. From it we gather that 1,588 policies were issued during the year under the Whole Life and Term Assurances, assuring a sum of ibe annual premiums on which would amount to £10,764155. The policies discontinued during the year numbered I,IU, assuring £828,026. The total policios in force at 81st December last numbered 17,646, assuring £5,293,118, The reversionary bonus amounts to £440,500 and the annua) premiums to £185,909 Us : lid; Under the endowment system 1,288 polioies. were issued during the year, assuring £249,109.603 policios, assuring £131,941 hud been discontinued, leaving a total number of policies this system. at the end of the year of 10,977, assuring £2,459,999. Including simple endowments, investments, annuities, etc, the total number of policies in force at the end of the year under tbsi department was 29,226, assuring £7,782,734. This is an increase during the year of 2,984 policies, assuring .£699,1)01. Of the 1,810 policies which were discontinued, 1,166 lapsed,' 385 were surrendered, 237 were the result of death, and ■fl 'matured. : Since, the. establishment of the Department policies have been' Issued, assuring £14,245,302, and 28,801
have . become- void,'' assuring £6,462,568, These figures' are really astounding.' iOtle.conld hafdly/believo that it iwere possible for an insurance company to make such-rapid strides in a young country like New Zealand, with a population of little over half a million. Anil yet the Company is making■ great .progress. every year. The balance sheet of the Department for.the year ending'- 81st; December shows that it is in a thoroughly sound financial position, and it is confidently expeotcd that the new business of the present year will exceed iu its propoiv tions anything of the past,:.'
