MEETING OF FARMERS.

,k meetingbf'farmerß interested in the formation of a Formers' Olub a the district was-held in tbe Maatorton Temperance Hall yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, about fifty persons being present. Mr Duncan M 'Gregor was voted to the chair, and the notice convening the meeting was read, The Chairman stated that the meeting had been called in consequence of a report submitted by a sub-com-mittee of the Mastertori Blaoksmith and Whee|wright Manufacturing Company, 'There were some thing? in conneotion with the report (whioh was here read) which were debatable. He thought tho time had arrived when the farmersibouW take.some' action in the way of combination, and providing for themselves accommodation, so that when they had business v> transact they need not stand at tbe street corners or meet in a hotel to transact"it; He was of opinion that a site other than-that offered'-liy'the Blacksmith Company should be procured, and the building should be larger; than that proposed. However, tho building suggested might do for a

time. The Club, would be of course open to all classes of the community, It whs a disgrace to tho district that a Farmers' Club was not long-since in existence. He felt sure .that now the matter had been taken up a strong combination would be formed.

Mr James Stuok'ey moved the adoption of the report, He,pointed out that it was neiessary in any room they might meet that they should have a fire, It was proposed to expend'£l6 a year-in "papers', £l6 in paying a Secretary, and about £46ta general 'expenses, It';'had ''been thought that £1 a year would be a reasonable subscription, but this could be reduced if the membership justified it. If a Club were formed a lecturer oould be prooured to instruct them periodically on matters affecting them, all, and grout advantages would

be derived in.othor ways by the farms ing community, • ■'■■'' ■■[

Mr George.Beetham seconded (he motion pro firing'Re trusted that party politics would not be introduced into the Club. In seconding the motion lie expressed the hope that all classes of the farming community would join in the movement. Mr Stuokey■:■ With the consent of the seconder of the motion I will withdraw my motion and move, " That it is desirable that a Farmers' Club be formed in Masterton j.aod that the report of the subcommittee be accepted." ;

Mr Beetham was/quite prepared to accept the amended resolution, He thought the subscription should not be less than a pound for a start,' although he fully realised the value of his pounds. What they should go in for was' cbrdial co-operation, whioh would be.for their, mutual benefit. •Although he was nof a farmer himself he bad a lively interest in the farming 'industry in tie Wairarapa, and if he were permitted to become- a .member he would gladly contribute corrcspouderioe on matters affecting .farmers. (Applause)/ - il!

Mr David Guild said tho last Farmers' Club had been formed by about half a dozen persons. He thought that a committee should be formed to can-

vas for members before deciding on buildings, The directors of tho BUksmitb and Wheelwright Manufacturing' Company were deserving of thanks for haying 1 taken the initiative in the matter, There was' no reason why a Club should not be formed (applause), ■Mr 0. H, Osborne thought the question of accommodation of farmers' horses and vehicles should stand over for a timnand that a Club ' for discussing questions affeoting the farming community should tirst he formed. The resolution as amended, was then put and carried unanimously, Mr D, Guild moved, that a committee consisting of Mesarß Lowes, Hessey, Stuckcy, J, andD. M'Oregor, J. B, Keith, F.C. Lewis, H. Holmes, and the mover, with power to add to their number, he appointed to draw ana report to a future meeting, and that they canvas the district for members. ' • Mr J, Hessey; Would it not be well if larraers now handed in their names and thus assisted the Committee ? Mr Wardell seconded the resolution, which was put and carried. ~. . Mr H; Vile stated that the meeting had not yet learned on what basis the Club: was to be formed or worked. The Chairman pointed out that the members could meet together- and decide on rules, etc, for themselves, The yearly subscription, was fixed at a guinea, and Mr W. B. Chennells was appointed Secretary, fro tern. A number ol gentlemen handed in their names as intending members, and the meeting dosed,
