A Farmers' Club will apparently soeu be an existing corporation in our midst, and judging by the number and character of the settlers present at yesterday's meeting it will be born under muoh better auspices than' the former association had the benefit of, The anuual subscription has been fixed at a guinea. There was some suggestion of making it less—later on if not now. Eegarding this we vehj. ture to say that if combination is as advantageous as it is hoped it will be, and as in this and in many other connections ensuring the co-operation of those with common' interests, it baa proved to be, there will be coDstaut and ample outlets for the. aggregate contributions of all the subscribers who can be got at the higher fee, in extensions of the scope and accommodation of the Club which can be made to contribute to the mutual use and profit of its members,' Economy is a very desirable thing, but it often jeopardises the success of an otherwise wellplanned movement, and an undue regard for it is as muoh to be guarded against as is the indulgence in extravagance., If the proposed Farmers' Club achieves what is expected of it, and is of the service it should be, one guinea per annum in subscription will be well spent, and we hope settlers will readily respond. It is in any case not muoh to invest in a wise venture.' The range of influence to bo exercised by the Club and the nature o its functions have yet .to be decided upon and defined. Personally w? had at first the impression that what it was proposed to form was in reality a kind of farmers' Chamber of Commerce, with rooms suitable for meetings, with a news and writing room, and with, perhaps, au exohange hall; but at yesterday's meeting reference was made to provisions-of a nature which would indicate that the (Hub would in some respects be a social one, with personal accommodation for its members, as well as facilities for the transaction of their business, Remark was. also made as to the necflss, ity of avoiding party politics. But in this particular it should be remembered that while it is not desirable that a Farmers' Oiub should resolve, itself into a merepolitipal organisation it will at the same time be oqo of its most important'offices to further ; the interests of farmers by seouring good legislation in matters which affect them, and it is likely to frequently become the duty of the Club to make representations through the member for the disi • triot with a view lb securing statutory reform'and itB 1 proper administration by the Government of the day, when the concerns of agriculturalists are at " There are, however,' many useful aireoLibns.in Tvhipb a Farmers' Club '< cap mpvei and some of theseivjH only evidence, themselves after the Asso-ciation-is in existence, TJie acquisition pf literature ip the shape of books, essays, and journals-the formation of a- small reference library, 1 iudeed-on subjects of importance to farmers, is one of the first consider [ tionß which seenis worthy of beipg ; entertained, Then, again, the institution of measures for gepuring regular and reliable market quotationa which shall be always at! the service ~of-f members,, would be of value | and there'would _ be, too, much information to be gained, concerning the outlet for produce,' stook and grain in the publications filed in the news room, and theso would be always available.
