Pahiatua v. Eketahuna.
The weather on. Saturday looked anything but promising for the match in which these two teamß were to first meet each other in the Cup contests: Both Olubs were, however, well represented, though some slight delay was caused through some of the loqhl team not turning up. to time. The ground, considering the weather, was in fairly good condition. The Eketa» buna captain (Fodenj won the toss and elected to play with the wind. The kick off was taken by the home skipper (Broughton) at 8.80 p.mi From start torfiuish (two thirty-five minute spells were played) the game was fast and furious. For some twenty minutes no score was made; ; the hall boing, however, most in the Reds (Pahiatua) twenty-fives, Several freekicks had been givenoneitherside, through one or two of the Beds being somewhat conspicuous for their off side play. From one of these penalty kicks just in front of the home goal F. Polling converted, and it was not long before the same thing happened again, This time, however, the kick was taken at a very difficult angle, and the supporters of the Yellows were loud in their applause as the oval took its course truly though a strong wind was blowing at the time. The first spell ended with the, scores, Yel lows six, Beds ml, In the second spell the Reds made gallant efforts to retrieve their lost ground, and again and again Broughton (who is a host in himself).led his men down the field, but to no purpose. The Yellows defended their goal well, and every man of them exerted himself to retain the advantage they had gained. The concluding ten minutes of the spell was played in the rain, and as it was getting dark the visitors contented themselves with keeping the ball out of touch as much as possible. The game ended with the scores of the first spell unaltered, 6to nil. Th 3 match was a most friendly one throughout, and no undue wrangling at the decision of the referee or umpires was noticeable. Mr Keetley acted in the former capacity while Messrs Tumor and R, Broughton wielded the umpires' flags. The game throughout was one in which every man seemed to put. forth all the strength and skill he .possessed for the benefit of his side, so it is almost invidious to single out any player for speoial distinction. The superior play and tact of the oaptaius of both teams cannot, however, go without a word of remark. Many a time throughout the 'match their coolness j and judgment saved their respective parties add they were always to be found "on time" where hatd and difficult work was to be done. The home team lacked combination compared with the yisitors, and to this- perhaps is due the fact that .though the goal of the Yellows was besieged time after time during the latter half of the game no score resulted. Hearty cheers were given for and by both teams at the conclusion of what may be fairly called the best contested and best spirited game ever played on the Pahiatua ground. • The visitors were entertained at dinner in the Commercial Hotel by their opponents in the evening,
