Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 1892. MASTERTON A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.

Being the extended hue of the Wairakapa Daily,:. with which it h '.-. identical. :, ',.'••

The Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association was never in a more flourishing and prosperous condition than it is to-day. During the past year its roll of membership has been largely

increased, its finauoial : position lias ' improved, and altogether it has be- ' ooine an institution creditable alike to { its energetic officers and to the district ( at large, Its most recent progressive 1 step has been that of incorporation, which places it in possession of the ' advantage? of all the old-established ' Associations in the Colony. The queeslion of amalgamation with the Society in the South Wairarapahasfor a con" , siderable time been under considera- , tion, but events which bate transpired during the past few months have clearly demonstrated .that this is iinpossible, The Association is now therefore standing on its own bottom, and with prudent management of its affairs there is no reason why it sjipuld not become one of the most important'institutions of its kind in the Colony, A* its bask )s a yaet expanse of fertile country recently opened up, a'galaxy of enterprising Settlers following agricultural and pastoral pursuits, and best of, all a unity of feeling- .which in no email degree contributes to the success of ' all institutions of this character. That there is room for two Associations in the Wairarupa is tolejably gertato, and it is therefore necWsary.'indsfld |t jyoulfl be unwise, to draw comparisons'between the two ■ at present in existence A little "holy rivalry" does undoubtedly oxißt, but thia should not have a prejudicial effect upon ej^er: it should tend rather to Multiply the numbpy flf exhibits at both arid to. increase the energy and deration, of the members pf eaph body. The Ifasterton Association iri ihepast has been relying altogether too much on tho South Wairarapa- for its exhibits. It should long since have offered inducements to bush'settlers p and runbolders in the immediate die- ' trjot to exhibit their produce;:; For afjer a11..b#6 not the* AMoowtibn been .established' for the special benefit of tboaein the Jjor'th }yaitarapa who cannot afford'to travel their stock to the Lower Valley 1 The bush districts ; have- latterly been thoroughly well i stocked, and from them the Maßterton > Association should rely in the' future for a large measure of its support. Small 'settlers should'be encouraged to compete, the Bhow ground should be thrown'wfdely open, and the exhibitors should not' bo 'confined 'to the comparative few who possess the ac/injiimodation and wealth necessary for keeping plppk exclusively for show . purposes. Tha'iptßho,WDJ the Maslerton Association' was a^greatj improvement ,00 those preceding it,! ' and we tirmly' belieye that the next: : will eolipse in all jrespeots thfi"wbibi-

tions of the past. Matty suggestions might with advantage be madofor the bettor management of the affaita of the Association in' general, but we believe that in the hands of those Bier* ! ling settlers who now hold office the Association will prosper as it has never done in the past,
