MATERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The moDtlily meeting of the Mast tei'ton School Committee was held last (Thursday) evening, there being present Messrs E, Feist (chairman), R. M. Galloway, W. M, Enathopo, W, Pragnell, and Z, M. Hoar. An apology for absence was read from Mr W. 6. Beard,
The minutes of tho previous meet ing were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a oredi balance of £lO Os 4d,
The Secretary of the -Education Board wrote, stating that the plans for the new infant school jn Masterton were in course of preparation. The head master reported that the number of children on the roll was 506, the average attendance 451, and the percentage of attendances 76. The attendance at the school during the past month had been small, but ma now improving. Mr N. Bunting had keen appointed third assistant teacher. He would ask that certain maps he provided if funds permit. Mr Easthope moved that before any. grant is made for maps the estimates for the ensuing year be prepared, Mr Pragnell seconded,—Carried, The Secretary stated that three informations had beon laid against parents for failing to send their children to school. The cases would be heard at the next sitting of the Court. The Truant Officer forwarded a list of parents upon whom first and final notices had been served. The Secretary nas instructed to take proceedings against the parents who had received final notices and had not sent their children to school.
v Miss Keeling reported that owing ,to colds amongst the children and wet weather the attendance during the raontb had been small. Thero were 99 children on the roll and the average attendance was 74. A few loads of metal were required at the door of the school. Inspector Leo had recommended Miss Harvey for ap< pointmentas a teacher when a vacancy occurred.
The matter of providing metal as asked for was left with the visiting member.
The following accounts wero passed for payment j—W, PfSgogll, £5 Is Cd; B. E, Hornhlow, £2 10s; Hounslow and Hoar, 10s. Mr Easthope moved, "Thatthis Committee disapproves of the closing of.the school on the occasion of the visit of circuses and suoh like," He did not think it right that; the school should bo closed on such occasions,
The resolution |lid not find a iconder, bpt Mr Basthopo intimated
that he would bring the matter forward until the resolution was passed. The Chairman explained' the oir» cumptances under which the school had been closed on the occasion of the visit of Wirtb's circus, Mr Jackson: I would explain that it is a question of policy, Mr Easthope: I take emption to this. not been'seconded and the discussion is out of order.
The Chairman refused to hear any* thing further about the matter, Mr Daniell was appointed visiting member and the meeting 'closed.
