J FIBST EDITION,
Being tub extended title or the . Wairabapa Daily, with which it is identical,
Thehe have been many arguments ( and pleas put forward by Wellingtonians in favor of the immediate construction of the Central Eoute, and the abandonment by Aucklanders of that, absurd alternative line which would not lead direct to the Hub of the Southern Hemisphere and the habitat of Dr. Newman \ but of all ! these efforts on Wellington's behall i none have been of snob a comical , character hb thatofMr John Plimmor , in a recent letter to the New Zealand 1 Times-nom, that is, since the indev ■ fatignble Doctor travelled over the ; Koute witb eyes raised far above so ' trivial and unpicturesque a subject as , pumice and advocated the construe- , tion of this costly effort to climb over a shank of Ruapehu, chiefly on ac< oount of the fine scenery to be met with, Mr Plimmer waves the olive branch to AuckLmdera, He points out that " Wellington is destined to become one of the greatest emporiums of commerce in the South Seas," that backed up by her fine agrioultutal districts (which, like a true Welliugtoniaii he seems to think are only to be found on the Wellington and Manawatu line) and fed by the Central Boute she -w ill attraot a commerce and accumulate a trea* sure even as Jerusalem did in the palmy days of Solomon. Now, says Mr Plimmer, in other words, do not be envious of all this, let us have this line and your reward shall be this:You bava a harbour rivalling the Bay of Naples for beauty, you have an Italian climate, hot springs, vineries, orango < groves, and other delightful attraotioDß, and may even have sptno share of commercial prosperity " under a wiso Liberul Government" (protected oranges ?), but your chief hope for the future is that if you let us alonß about this line and don't go on nagging with your ridiculous League we will travel over this very route to spend our money, the wealth it has brought us, among your groves and " spreading ferns," " beautiful gardens," and " healing baths." Verily this burst ot poetic description rivals the little Doctor's. We may tell Mr Plimmer, that rosy as this picture appears to be for the n»al cities, there are those around herewho think that if the money they require could be spread over the roadß of the bush districts the Colonywould reapan earlier and more certain return, than in the construction of lines, whose advocates have great difficulty in demonstrating how. working expenses are to be returned, Of the two routfs proposed, the Central is undoubtedly the one to be chosen, but is either warranted at present ? We think not.
