FRUIT IN THE WAIRARAPA.

The Visit of Mr Hanlon, j Mr L. Hanlon, the fruit expert, j lisb returned from the Wairarapa, where he delivered lectures last week | at Greytown, Carterton, and Mastertou. He also took occasion to visit , the orchards in these various districts, * and gave the owners advice on the cultivation of fruit and the best means j to combat with blights and pests. He comes back impressed wi th the fact that j Afruitcullure has been sadly neglected, Ttnd that the settlers need to be aroused to a sense of the profit they might reap by devoting greater attention to this j braneh of industry. For instance, he has heard of orchards whose owners bove been making as much as from G iBO up to £BO, and as high as £IBO [ an acre out of their fruit. Apples are the fruit most largely produced, but Mr Qnnlon thinks tbat pears and cherries might also be grown with great advantage. The objection ( raised to the growth of cherries is that the birds play havoc with them, but if a hundred or more trees were grown together the spoils of tho birds ' would be inappreciable, as they only begin to prey upon the fruit when it is ripe for plucking. Mr Hanlon was specially pleased with the orchards of Messrs Alpass and Kempton at terton. Ho is now awaiting the l arrival of the Minister of Lands, and after conferring with him he intends * jtp start on a lecturing tour through Manawatu district, and on by way of Taranaki to Auckland, whence, ( after a short visit to tho Thames, he , will go on to Whannarei,—N.Z, ] Times.
