In those days the rivers in tbe district were unbridged, and to send timber to Wellington was a great undertaking, The deceased gentleman was the first Captain of the Carterton Me Volunteers, the second corps of the kind formed in |he Wairarapa, Through bis efforts the Town Hall was established, the public school erected, and' many other local institutions organised, In all T' local movements he took, an active part, When Carterton was constituted a Borough Mr Fairbrother was elected Mayor and has filled the office with credit to himself and ihe district nntil a few months ago.
