PAHIATUA.

[From Our Own Correspondent.)

" Pahiota, Saturday, Mr T. Murphy, a newly-Battled resident of Ballance, lias built rather a nice house in that township for which he intends to apply for an accommodation house license at the County Licensing Committee's meet' ingin June. I learn, however, that many of the Mastertou-Mangahao settlers are opposed to any house being licensed on the blook. It is perhapß owing to their temperate and thrifty habits that the Bottlers there have so uniformly made for themselves comfortable homesteads and become prosperous whero nothing but' dense bush stood but a few short years since and now question whether a hotel'will tend to increase their prosperity.

For sometime past Mr ff, P, Sinclair (who runs a tri-weekly coach toMakuri) has had a bulk store in the Makuri township. The want of proper and more permanent arrange' raenls have always been felt. Messrs Trewby Bros., drapers of this town,' who have established for themselves quite a name for farsightedness, have now purchased the goodwill of Mr Sinclair's business and intend estab-

lishing themselves thoroughly there at once, retaining their town business at the same time. The Pahiatua Football Olub are

holding their annual ball in the publio hall on Qneon's Birthday. This event has come to be considered such a feature of the year's social programme that it goes without saying it will be a success.

"Billy Barlow," the veteran entertainer, was here last night, and gave an excellent performance to a decidedly appreciative audience. It was much to be regretted tlht through the inclemenoy of the weather the Hall was only moderately filled.

No doubt he will secure a better audience to-night (Saturday) when he

appears again. The local Jockey Club having logged up and stumped a racing track on the property leased by them from Mr W, R, Ooe are now considering the question of raising funds to form

the track. With this end in view the Committee propose issuing debentures if the members of tlieCl'ib jußtify their action, A general meeting will be held on the 11th insfc. .to consider the matter. The Club has now a roll of nearly a hundred members.
