The Animal Meeting, , The annual, meeting ot the Mas* ' terton auxiliary of the British and . Foroign Bible Society was held in Si i Matthew's schoolroom last (Thursday) • evening- About fifty person's were present, the chair being occupied by ' the Rev W, E. Paige. The meeting having been opened , with prayer and sieging, the chairman . gave a short address in which he , attributed the small attendance to the lnxity oE the Committee. He , pointed out that through the efforts of i the Mnstcrton branch ot the Society a ■ e;reat many more Bibles had been f used than hitherto, He hoped that at the next, annual meeting a more , satisfactory balance-sheet would bo 3 presented than at the present, I The balance-sheet for the past year ■ was then read by the Treasurer, Mr E. Feist, who formally moved its « adoption, The receipts were shown '1 to be £l2 17s Gjjd, and after paying j 1 all expenses there was a balance in II hand of X2 which included J £2 6s 6d just handed in by Miss 0 Pearson. r The Rev. H. T. Robjohns, deputay tion from the Society, in seconding the 11 adoption of the balance-sheet, pointed '• out that to thearuount - of £5 Is Id had been'soltlat the Masj terton dep6t during the year. They d had also assisted the general work of o the Sooiety to the tune of £ 3 Is 3d. is He regretted to say there was only one t lady cauvasaer in the district, This lady, however, had merited the hearty >■ thanks of the Society,' The sum of £9 J 16s had been Bent to London for 6 another supply of Bibles, This was j good work, He then referred to the L . progress made by various auxiliaries in e New Zealand during the past year j e and pointed out that alegaoy of £9OOO > had been left the Society by a Sydney ' 6 resident. The demands on the Society for Scripture for foreign couutries was very great, and could hardly be met, e Tho three great departments of theit a work were the translation of the e liible, the manufacture of the book, 'f and its distribution all over the world, " Seven hundred colporteurs were travelj ling through twenty-four countries, selling a million copies as they went, Daring the past three years good mis sionary work had been done in the Easl y by women, three hundred and forty ol a whom were now engaged. THo Society :■ was the largest manufacturing instituk tion in the world. The Bible was 0 now translated into 831' languages, 6 300 of which was the wmk ol the •j Sooiety. There were altogether 8424 , languages on earth, and it tberefon d behoved them to be up and doing, e The motion for the adoption of 'the e balance-sheet was put and carried, ■ e A vote of thanks was passed to the • officers and Committee for their oerj[ vices during the past year.
