MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR.

A Han Found Dying in a \ . Paddock — v Shortly after G o'clock yesterday morning Constable Murdock received information that a man, who appeared to have been badly knocked about, was lying in a paddock opposito Lane's stables in Sydney street, On proceeding thither he found the man ' < in the state described, and further observed that he appeared to have been drinking heavily. He was, however, perfectly unconscious,'and j<jlie constable accordingly had him ( conveyed to the hospital as quickly as possible. Here it was found that his head was badly injured, All efforts to restore him to consciousness pro* d unavailing, and he continued in a state of insensibility until ' bis death, which occurred about four ( o'clock in the afternoon. Deceased bad the appearanceof being a working i man, was fairly well dressed, and | seemed to be between 85 and 40 years ' of age, Some papers found in his pockets bore the names of Dixon and Walton, but whether either of those to hira'is not known, nor up to a late hour last night had any clue to his identity been discovered, In fact the affair is shrouded in mystery, Mr H, W, Kobhison, District Coroner, has been informed of the cirpumstandes by the police, and ah inquest will be held in due course ~N.Z.
