SCENE AT THE LAND BOARD.
! Mr McCardle and the Commissioner, When the minutes of the last monthly meeting of the Land Board were being read yesterday morning the Commissioner (Mr J. H. Baker) expressed a wish to insert a paragraph to the effect that he had dissented from the decision of the Board to grant the application of Mr Haliburton, of the Makuri, relative to paying off all dues. Mr Baker explained that he was anxious to show that he was not in accord with the other members in agreeing to grant the application provided Mr Haliburton made a declaration that ho had resided on the lapd. Mr W.'.W. McCarcjlo; You are too late, Mr Chairman. Yon shopld have entered 'your protest last meeting. The Commissioner: So I did, Mr McCardle: You are here to carry out the resolutions of the Board, I for one am not going to hold a sinecuro seat. I will assist you as far as I can, but 1 cannot agree witli you n an attempt to override the aotions of the Board, The Commissioner 11 am not trying to do so. Mp McCardle | You have already done 50. The Commissioner.' I have not. • Mr MoOard'.e: I will not sit here again if you are going to act in that way. The Chief Commissioner replied that the Board had a paid officer who had reported that Mr Haliburton had not carried out all the improvements required, It was no use having a ranger if bis reports were to te disregarded Mr McOardle said th#t to a}l intents and purposes Mr 'Haliburton had resided on (he (and, The Ooniisissiflnpr; I suppose I may be allowed to 6ntej> my protest ?
