WESTERN AUSTRALIA.
Its Present Condition, A friend, who is a close obaervar and a competent critic, writing to us from Perth, W,A„ under date of 4th April, instant, thus alludes to the condition and prospect of things oyer there:-
" Western Australia is terribly behind the timos, but is now, under its first experience of a responsible Government, beginning to move on. Tho whole allow, almost, is run by outsiders, to the bitter disgust of the sleepy natives, who regard the imported element as usurpers of a throne they would not themselves occupy, A THBEE MILLION LOAN. Thecouotrj is now borrowing some three millions, and with the money a very wide scheme of Public Works is to be carried out, so every effort is to be made to givo the place a chance, THE CURSE OF ARIDITY. The great curse,, however, is the want of water. Given water and it is impossible to s«y what the future of Western Australia might not be in its positiou of being the closest ot all Australasian colonies to England and India, the last and first port of call respectively, and eventually the western terminus of a huge transcontinental railway und telegraph system to connect with the ocean liners which drop you in India in eleven days and in Suez four days later. It is just a toss up, and a question which time only can deoide,
mohevtobemabe. There is money to be made here just now by a smart man with a little capital, thpugb I cannot help feeling sorry to see bo nany outsiders flock ing to the colony, lured here, doubtless, by the very much exaggerated puffs the plape has received outside. When they arrive the stern reality damps their ardour,"
