Your Committee, in submitting the report for their terra of office, are satisfied that the general welfare of the schools bus been attended to, and the management bas been up tn the usual standard. The number of children on the school rolls are us follows: Main school 587, Halhtreot 112, or a total of 699. The average attendance at both schools have been good, but your Committco has been compelled during the past year to take etops under the Compulsory clauses of tlio Education Act, to malio parents send their children lo school, and in a few oases extreme measures are being taken against parents. Soon alter their election, your Committee approached the Town Lands Trustees and applied for assistance to enable them to get clear of the old liabilities, and your Committee are phased to report that the Town Lands Trustees favourably considered thoir application, and thanks are due to the Town Lands Trustees for their liberality, and also to the deputation from the School Cummittee who waited upon the Trustees and ably advocated the application by giving a clear and explicit statement of the position of the school funds.

The head masterof the main school, Mr W. H. Jaokson, and Miss Keeling of the Hall street school, have as usual maintained the efficiency of their respective establishments, and together with their assistants are to he oomrnended for the results of the annual examination which was in eveiy way satisfactory. Some uiontba ago your oommittee decided to ask the Education Board to take tho necessaiy steps to-.vaid getting ilj.o books useii in tho schools imported direct by tho Hoard, and supplied at the lowest possible prices. The Board acceded by forwarding an application to tho Grovernmeir, in accordance with the wish of the Committee.

The second school question is now almost Betty, a communication having been recoived by your Com* raiuee from the Education Board that plans would bo presented at the Board's next meoting. The Balance sheet attached shows receipts £214 14s 4d, expendituin £2Ol 17b 9d, leaving a credit balance of Jll2 16s 7d. Against this there lire accounts amounting to A'D 10a 8d thus giving the incoming committee £3 6s 4d aud the capitation £2O to begin their term of office.
