The ' record, at any rate, greatly exceeds thntforany other year during the last | decade, in all, 3779 persons took up land of an area of 1,728,983 acres, or an ayera'go of 45& aores each, as against, for the previous year,' 2,063 ,> persons, who acquired an area of 2,107,735 acres, or an average of : 1021 acres each, thus showing that the average holding for the past year , was much smaller than that for the preceding twelve months. If we exclude pastoral holdings, the average > for' last year will be 198 aci'es per splector, as against an average'of 249 1 acres for each selector in the previous year. We proceed to give thp main items of detail. During last year 48 Special Settlement Associations, \yith a ipeipberehip of lfil pcrpops, took up.342,000 acres, or an jivefage of 196 acres ejicb.
