The Recent Raffing Case.
[to the editor.]
Sir,—A correspondent signing himself Frederick F, Godfrey replies to my lettor re the recent raffle on licensed premises, Is this the man who when questioned by the counsel for the prosecution, swore " that ho was not aware of the provisions of the Gaming and Lotteries Aot, otherwise he might not have organised the rafflel" Connect that statement with another in his letter, " that he has ' been in various raffles connected with every church persuasion in tho colony," and the opinjon gains ground that anent the vice of gambling he is not such an intellectual fledgling as he would have us believe His assumed ignorance of my meaning in using the term " exposing " is too thin, and his remarks are a mere frivolous play upon words I might also inform Mr Godfrey in reply to his little homily on Christian fcyirtueand charity that we are so "familiar with that kind of talk in Masterton when the liquor traffic or other vicious systems ate "attacked that we have a long time ago relegated it to the world ot cant. Your correspondent further says that he has been in raffles in connection with every churchpersuasion in theOolony. I challenge him to name a Wesleyan bazaar wbero raffling was permitted, I have no doubt the promoter, and the licemee.who has just escaped by " the skin,of his teeth," are very well satisfied with the decision of the Bench—not so the crowd outside. As these are my last words on the BUbject in your columns' pleaso accept my thanks lor space given. I am eio., John Dukes. [We have excised a portion of this ■letter nhich we do not consider it judicious to publish,—Ed. W.D.T.]
