The City Oou oil held a spec's) meeting to-night to consider a letter from the Canterbury Fire Insurance Association, stating that it could not . guarantee the continuance oi the subsidy for lire prevention purposes. It was stated at the meeting that the letter in question did not exactly t convey the Association's meaning and the matter was referred to the Fire Brigade Committeo to endeavour to arrange a conference with the Association. Councillors were unanimously upposed to making any corapomise which would involve accepting less than the previous grant. - X alu&Ue Coal and Shale Discovery. Intercarqill, April 12. It is reported that the Orepuki Coa| and Shale Company, which ha hitherto been working the outcrops with indifferent success, has now gos into the face of good coal, lift thick at the 240 ft tnnnel. The coal is overlaid by a 3ft seam of paraffin shale and Bft of good fire clay, Shale is abundant, and has been tested at the oil works in Scotland, with a result that shows about 50 gallons of crude petroleum per ton, whioli is from 14 to 18 gallons above the average Scottish shales, which are the basis of a great industry. ( Tie fruolilH For Women. ~ ■ Dunsdin, April 12. A largely attended meeting was held in the City Hall, this evening, in support of a movement extending the franchise to women. Kesolutions Were carried to the effect (1) that the timo has arrived when the Parliamentary franchise should be extended to women, not as a privilege, but as a right; (2) that this meeting call on the Government aud Legislature to pass without delay a measure conferring the franchise on all adult women; (0) that this meeting thanks the members of Parliament who Bo energetically strove last session to pas 3 the Bill) and express a hope that they will again support it this session. Five ■ ladies spoke at the meeting, Sir R. Stout, and the Hons. Downie Stewart and R. Oliver also spoke.
