FOOTBALL.

[By Diookhes.]

The team to represent the Master- . ion Club in the matches with the Merivale and Alhambra Clubs at Easter was finally ohosen last even" ing, and will consist of the following j e players i-D'Aroy, McCarty, Thomp- jj son, 0., J., and H, Perry, Holmwood, j ( Whatman (captain), Day, Gray, Wat- g, ■on, McKenzie, Malcolm, Cameron, f r Holmwood and Bannister. The team Sl is a splendid one, and is especially „ ( strong in the forward division. The g whole of the men, with the exception ol four, haye represented the Waira- . rapa Union in matches of past years, and nine were in the rep. team of last season. If the team is in any sort of ci form, they should bring back an tl excellent record, and 1 hope-to see v the little timo before Easter fully tl occupied by hard training. tl I have been requested to give a l< criticism of the team and will c< endeavour to do so, from an impartial 1 point of viewd D'Anov, 13st 21bs, —best full-back o in Wellington province, represented ti Wairarapa for several years, splendid t< at kicking and tackling, and very fast h when in full swing. Will probably 1 play three-quarter in one of the v matches, I Thompson, 9st 81bs,-plays three- 1 quarter, and has.also represented the f district; a pretty player, very fast, dodgy, and good at passing. Very 8 dangerous in opponents territory, Not 1 good at tackling, and rather frightoned ( of big men. ! McCarthy, list; a rep. of last < season; plays centre three-quarter; 1 good drop kick with either foot, and I splendid " collar," dodgy and tricky i runner, and passes excellently; kicks i with great judgment, and if in form < will be a great acquisition to the team. ! 0, Perry, list; plays three-quarter | back, and has represented Wairarapa i in the past; fast runner, and parses i with great judgment; racher weak in . collaring; fine drop kick, and best < place kick in the team, Excellent pot, < if time is allowed; is far better oo the aggressive than the defensive, J. Perry, lOst 71b, has always represented Wairarapa, and is the best half in Wairarapa; very consistent player, always with the ball, and iikely scoring ram. Collars well, and splendid dodgy runner; is always in form, and is often the saviour of his | team. He is rather forgetful when in his opponents twenty-five and stiks to the ball. He should endeavour to remember that the three-quarters are [ on the field. . E. Holmwood, list 21b; centre half; weakest man in the backs. Good at stopping rushes, but is far 100 slow in getting off the ball; will not take telling, and is only put in the team for his passing qualities. H. Perry, 9st Gib; halfback; the " baby" of the team; splendid tackier and good dodgy runner, but has a great weakness-he will not pass. J If he could get over this selfishness, would be a really first-class man. He has represented Wairarapa. 1 Gray, 12«t, a very brilliant forI ward, played for first season last year, e and at once donned the rep, colors, a Tlays with great dash and never fags. Very dangerous when near the scoring line;last and strong runner, good 8 dribbler, and never misses bis man, 1 Is reckoned one of the best forwards [! in the Province. 'i Watson, 12st 81b; another dashing S player, excellent mate for Gray ; 9 plays on the ball all through the * game, and always in best of form, Hard worker in scrum, good on the loose, and very safe <' collar," Has played three-quarter for his team, and is a useful map anywhere, Has played for years lii the rep. team, MoXenzib, 12st 101b; very fast forward, and shines on the line out; gets away well with the ball, and plays a very unselfish game. Good dribbler, and always does his share of the work.

Has had to stand a lot of" naggling" over his inclination to off-side play, but lam glad to say that bad habit is diminishing. Represented the district for the past season. 0. Holmwood, lOst 61b; lightest forward, but is a rattling hard-work-ing fellow, with plenty of" go," Plays like a Trojan from start to finish, and never says a word, Is always in hard training, and dues a large share of the work, without shining very conspicuously. Malcolm, list, a powerful forward, apd is an excellent player when he feels way. Has a fine knowledge of every point of the game, in a fast, dribbler, and good on the line out. Has represented both Wellington and Wairarapa, Has charge of the team going South as manager, and will, no doubt, do all in his power ior the welfare of the team, Cameron, list 101b, a young and promising player, Has not seen much service, but is the coming man. Critics are very glad tc see him the team, as he will strengthen the forward division a great deal. Very fast on the loost and extremely unselfish. Good "collar 11 and not by any means slow. Bannister, 18st 101b; a heavy hardworking forward; good in tighl scrums, but ngwjiero in a fast loose, Will probably give way to anothei in one of the two matohes. Shines on a wet day in a scrummage game, bnt rather slow for a fast match. If an honest, steady worker. . Day, Hst, has been reckoned thf best forward in the Wairarapa, and has 'fhe district consis tently. Excellent playi throughout with ft lot of dash j splendid man in all points of the game, anc the te»iu would be lost without him Whatman, 13st 41b; captain of tin team','an honest worker, very tinsel fish, &f}tj Mendid general.' Ha; also good in tight or loose garaesj' and h at complete dontrol of his men. In conclusion,' I wis|i the mer eyepy s/ipw being satisjjed that il the tpanj as phosen arrives palely or tlje ground of t|ie tljey will tak? 9 lot p( gating, M tb.e |))pe|ing of t|ie tyaprapt Bllgby Union en Tuesday evening, il that visits were due tc the Wairarapa from W.Spnul, Nel80ti, Marlborough, Taranaki anu „ lington, so that there is little likeliIfopd of sending a Wairarapa team -away thiß ' I hear that several members of the Mastefton Club intend retiring after the Southern toijr, This, is to be regretted, It wi|l behove ypupg playere to get tfremselyes in fortp, so that they might fill the vacant positions, it is probable that the Greytowc Club will be unable to got together a senior team this year, some of the most prominent players in the Olub having retired, - Practice matches will be played by the Mastorton and Red Star Clubs to; morrow on their respective grounds, A general meeting of the Bed Stai Club is to be held in the Empire Hotel on Monday night. • ,
