"TWOPENCE FOR MANNERS."

A lesson in manners is certainly cheap at One Penny. Our bucolic contemporary the WairarapaStandard has roused itself from along lethargy in order- to throw a lurid light upon our supposed lapses from journalistic virtue, and, when first we saw the leading article in which we are shown up, we ..had suicidal thoughts of putting up the shutters. But second thoughts are best, and we shall continue for the present to go to preSß. Wo think, however, that it is a pity when anything awakes the poor old Standard from its accustomed snooze, for it ia sure to wake up very cross; and when the Standard is oross it is rude as well. Some people are made that way. When our Greytown Granny was being " eddicated," the school dame used to make a charge of Twopence a week extra for Manners. We wish that the result of such lavish expenditure had been more enduring. It is a melancholy reflection lor ourselves, that our contemporary should shake its palsied finger at us and lecture us like a scoldiug auld wife. With every desire to make allowance for the advance of senile decay, we must nevertheless console ourselves with the thought—when the Wairarajm Standard lays down the liw about good breeding—that there are other standards of which more account is taken.
