The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 1892.
The Woodville paper a few days ago made some mysterious references to w hat '' terms the" petty tyranny'■ of the Welling'!?. ll W Board, which have been freely copied nj' organs of the Liberal Party. The object tif this transparent attack is plain, althoughourcontemporary's reference is so vague. As regards any definite statement of plaint, it gives an intelligent reader who oan comprehend it at all the idea that the editor, who was somewhat shaken by that sad event, the Pahiatua poisoning esse, is still anxious to pose as a mystery monger, Possibly in this instance, as m the other, the weakness of his case raakeß reticence wise, At any rate, the only suggestion he makes is that a change "in the constitution of the Land "Board is badly required, and when " Mr M'Cardle's term of office expires, "as it will shortly, the Government "should reosgnise, what is undoubtedly the wish of the "settlers, that the Forty-Mile Bush " should be represented by another of " their number, and give some hope uof a better state of things." Now, we have no hesitation in saying that Mr M'Cardle possesses an infinitely better knowledge of things pertaining to land than any other member of the Board. He has for years resided jn the Bush and has had special fa.cijiti.es for acquiring information •which enables him to form jui unbiased judgmentrcgarding secernent in general—facilities whicli at any rate 8$ not afforded those whose daily occupation confines them to the limited radius of the township in which they reside, Prom the personal knowledge we possess of Mr M'Catdle wo regard him as one who would not failtoe^; niße6t, ? BiaeDt . ana careful decision in all 4 n » u J ß requiring the. consideration o» Board, nor do we think he would be neglectful of the welfare of. the distriot which he represents,, Further than this, we may say that we do not believe that he would use his position on the Land Board to promote ulterior interests of less worthy oharacter, Then why should he be singled.outfor,retirement?. To hear of Mr M'Cardle being replaced by an ex-member of the Board who has made himself particularly prominent of late in Pahiatua, would come to us as no surprise, since we are aware that one is of the "right colour" and the other presumably "is not. However, _ if such a thing does transpire it will be one of the most flagrant acts of injustice ever perpetrated in the district, and another instance of the scandalous manner in which the present Government is making provision for its friends at the expense of the people, i
