FIRE AT UPPER PLAIN.

Mr Frank Hood's Homostsad Destroyed. Tho nine-roomed house of Mr ._ Hood, situated on the Upper ■Qffiftlain road a few miles from Muster* was totally destroyed by tire yesterday afternooD. Mr Hood wasaway fiom homo at the time the fire occurred, and Mrs Hood was paying a visit to a neighbour. On returning she discovered the house to be full of poke, and on. opening the door the flames burst through the roof. As there was nobody about, tho children being away from home, it was impossible to save any furniture. Mrs Hood, , however, who had with her an infant only eight months old, placed the child in safety and managed (o remove a quantity of clothing. The firo origi- j nated through a defect in the chimney. The roof of the building had twice previously caught 6re,and on Tuesday last the house was only saved by the prompt application of water, The house was insured for £l5O and tho -furniture for £75 in the New Zealand Insurance Company. Mr Hood estimates his loss above insurance on i ' furniture and effects alone at £IOO. The house was thirty years old and A built of heart of totara, everything . so thoroughly dry that it burnt like matchwood, The chimney was formed of clay and boulders, and was - construo'.ed by the late Mr Crayne. j ■ ; I
