THE HESSIAN FLY.
Hints to Farmers. Tho following communication was received by ub on Saturday from the Secretary of the Lands and Survey Department, and will be read with interest by formers ■■;—■■- ..: , Wellington, 12th February.
Gentlemen—Referring to my letter of the l!)th ulto. re the Hessian fly, I shall be glad, to hear from you wiiat steps, if any, are being taken to prevent tho.epreadof the pest in your district. From a perusal of > Mies Ormer'od's pamphlet you will see that she recommends that.all sittings, chaff, etc, from the threshing machine be burned as well. as' the stubble j but as this latter is almost impossible, the ground ought to be carefully ploughed with a digging plough fitted with a skim coulter so as to'thorougbly bury the top surface of the furrow. .Further information ia being oqlleoted by this Department. In tho meantime anything further you oan supply will be gladly received. I shall also be glad to receive the names ol the, farms on which tho Hessian fly was found. ■
