BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

Tho monthly meeting of tho North Wairarapa Benevolent Trustees was held in the Magiorton Institute this (Thursday) morning. PresentMessrs R, M. Galloway, (Chairman), R. D. Dagg, Jas. Stuckoy nd 8. Correspondenoo relative to several applications for relief was read. The Trustees considered they had now used every effort to compel the Williams family to return to Wanganui, und it was decided that for the future they must administer ' tho Aot as they find it, An application from a widow with a family of yonng and grown up children was considered, the Trustees deciding that under the existing circumstances they wore unable to grant relief, _ B' fire dealing with further applications it was unanimously resolved that before relief is granted to wives of families whose husbands are known to be alive, the Aot must bo complied with m the taking out of warrants for desorlion or maintenance. The police reports were read also recommendations from the Dorcas Socioty, It was decided to allow Mrs Peacock the sum of 15s per week ; to reduce the allowance to the children of Airs Clifton to £1 per week ; to allow Mrs Alderslado 7o Gd per week ; and that all expenses incurred on behalf'of other districts be charged to such districts according to the Hospitals and Charitable Aid Act, The Secretary reported that four persons had been leliovod since last meeting, two of whom, suffering from incurable diseases, hud been returned to thoir own dißlriots. The Chairman read an extract from the Daily of the previous day con" taining certain statements said to have beeft made by Or Booth at a meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council, After considerable discussion it was

resolved that Cr Booth was not / warranted in making such sweeping and that Messrs Galloway, -■ Stuckey, and Dagg be appointed a Committee to take such stops as they might consider necessary to obtain further information on the subject, . and to publicly contradict the statomejts alleged to have been made against the administration of the Trustees. The diary was read from the dato of the previous meeting and the Secretary's action in dealing with casual cases confirmed. The regular cases as amended were ordered to be continued till next meeting, and tho meeting adjourned,
