Flour, protected to the extent of 2s per central, fell $28,047 in a single year j while with grain and pujse the exports stood for 1884 L 1,708,000, as againstLßß2ooo in. 1888, tt)e.fall being over half a million, , The total decline in exports, almost wholly of protected articles, was L 1.165,160 for the year, It must be understood that these 1 were exports of articles described by Mr Hayter as "the produce or manufacture of Victoria." .> ••'
On the year compared by Mr Hayter there was, on the whole, an'increase of exports as compared with . tjje- ''previous year amounting to 41,863,654* M !)ei was sorry to say that what made up the difference and brought up the balance was an increased export of £2,512,524 in sovereigns. The total export of money .for the- year was the enormous amount of £3,524,643, the increase being as abgve stated: Thus does Mr Hayter show itiSf; J?rotecfibn' has vastly'' decreased tbe export of sovereign's.
