The surmises on the Pahiatua poisoning case are plentiful, but very inconclusive. Our Masterton contemporary declares that ' the ; poisoning was the work of a miscreant with a motive, and that no pains should be spared to bring the poisoner to justice, But against this theory we have the fact that on the day preceding the poisoning, children tampered with the food of the guests as a frolic, and it is not impossible that the joke of the ono day might have been repeated on the other in n serious form. The evidence on this aspect of the case produced at the inquest was altogether insufficient, indeed, the witnesses who could have thrown light on this point were not called. Our Pahiatua contemporary points out that there was negligence on the patt of the police in not clearing up this matter, the only extraordinary consideration being that the proprietor of that journal in his capacity as foreman of the jury did not insist upon all essential evidence being forthcoming, We are reluctant ourselves to believe in the theory of murder; it is more reasonable to suppose in the face of known facts that the ignorance of youth led up to the catastrophe.
