The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 1892.

The new way of making a Colonial : Governor appeals to be proceeding ■ at tho present time. Mr Ballanoa is. 1 understood to have supplied a list of ; names ot persons who would be acceptable to the Colony, and Lord Knutsford is understood to have sent a name for consideration to Earl Onslow, and Earl Onslow will perhaps consult Mr Ballauce and Mr Ballance | will perhaps take the opinion of the Trades Unions, and the outcome of the pother will be the selection of a person who may or may not suit the Colony. We have had a run of good Governors on the old lines, and even the present Premier has endorsed the impartiality of Sir William Jeryois and tho fair ness of Lord Onslow. But, leaving well alone is not tho characteristic of the Liberal Party, which apparently courts trouble. Should the coming man prove an unsatisfactory Governor the responsibility will rest upon Mr Ballance. Hitherto, it has devolved upon the Colonial Office. If a good ' Governor were sent to us we had reason to bo grateful and if ono of the Sir Arthur Gordon type were given to us we were at liberty to blame the Homo Government and to demand a change, If the new Governor is to be one of our own choice and we make a blunder in our selection, we shall be laughed at andridiculed, How are we to know the respective merits of a Sir Thomas or a Sir George or a Sir John ] Mr Ballance mayhavo a voice in the matter, but he is powerless to obtain a' Liberal ruler from a Conservative Ministry, He may want an English Badical sent out or a Colonial Radicaleothroned, butDowningStreefc is unlikely to meet him on these points, If he merely wishes to choose between several members of the uon» servative Party at Home he has set himself a task for which he is hardly qualified. .Fortunately if there be little wisdom in our Colonial Cabinet there is much sagacity in the Imperial Ministry, and any error into which • the former is likely to fall will be corrected by the late. The appoint- ! ment of a new Governor may be hung up for a while by the interven- ] tion of the Premier, but ultimately it j will probably be made in accordance I with the Downing Street view. If we 1 get a good man Lord Knutsford will ] be praised, if we obtain a bad one Mr 1 Ballance will be blamed, Probably • the dearest wish of Mr Ballance's , heart is to be' mado o bight by a < Conservative Ministry at Home. With i this in view he will probably be mild i and gentle in his communications ' with Lord Knutsford.
