FIRE BRIGADE CONCERT.
The annual concert ol the Greytown Fire Brigade was held at the Palace Thoiitre last niglit, This was preceded by a torchlight procession, during Which firework? were sent up, While the procession was going on, the tiro'bells began ringing -violently,' and a house,(on which was written " Darktown Lunatic Asylum " " Board aud Lodging 10/- per week") was seen to be on fire. The Brigade (dressed as clowns, la.) hurried to the scene of action, with usual promptness, but all their efforts to extinguish the flames were in vain. Then came " wailing and gnashing of teeth,'' for it was discovered that tho inmates had become suffocated, and were boing burnt to dsath. A lew more rockets were sent up, and then the crowd of spectators hurried to the concert, at which there "vas a large attendance, the Hall being packed, This was opened by an overture,
played by the Greytown String Band, which was heartily applauded, Miss Widdop (the well-known pianist from
Wellington) presided at the piano. The young lady also played several accompaniments during the evening, Mr Wakelin, tho Mayor, made a few remarks, and requested that there should be no encores, as the programme was a lengthy one. : Mr Fred Jones, of tho Wellington Star •Gymnasium Club, performed the horizontal bar act and feats of Fancy Juugling with wondorful skill, which won the continued applause of the audience, livery item on the programme was carried out in a highly satisfactory mannor. Notwithstanding the request of Mi Wakelin, there were sevearl encores. After the concert the, hall wus cleared for a dance to which about lorty couple stayed, who appeared to enjoy it immensely.
