A RELIGIOUS MANIAC.
In a-Doylorablo Condition. A man named John Thompson, who is not uuLnown in this district, was arrested at the Upper Taueru yesterday by Sergeant Honnan and Constable May on a charge of being a lunatic at large, The unfortunate fellow appears to be suffering from a religious mania, Un Thursday he appeared at the station of Mr Hood t&conducted himself in a most extraordinary manner. He was quite oblivious to all surrounding cironmstances, and was given up to prayer and supplication. When remonstrated with lie became desperate and stabbed himself in the chest with a knife, inflicting a fearful wound. Ho also cut himself about the legs, The knife was taken from him by the station hands, and information was givon to tho police. The unfortunate fellow wis discovered by Sergeant Hannan kneeling on the side of a hill praying and singing hymns. When spoken to lie explained " Let me alono I Let me alone I We Will soon be swallowed by an earthquake!" It was with great difficulty that tho man was placed in a conveyance and brought in to Masterton. On arriving at the cells he was examined by Dr Hosking, who dressed his wounds. He told the doctor that Ma soul had visited Heaven and re- • turned. The man was in a deplorable condition. He will be removed Wellington asylum.
