INQUEST AT EKETAHUNA.
Tio Late John Quartaan, An inquest was held at Ekelaluma on Thursday before Mr H. Aulin, J.F., touching the death of John Quarterman. A jury ot six was empannelled, of whom MrF, D. Felling was chosen foreman. Constable May conducted the proceedings, Patrick Hogan deposed that he was cross cutting a log on the railway works by the Deep Creek near Newman with ihe deceased when the log canted and fell, a limb of the tree striking jthe_ deceased across the shoulders, He jumped over the log to his assistance and called to his mates. Quarterman seemed in great pain, They did all they could for him, but he died before getting him into ihe camp. P. lieahy deposed that he was working in the gang with thedeoeased about a chain from them, Hearing them sing out he ran over and saw that the limb of the tree had struck his mate. He went and got some sacks to make a stretcher to carry him into the oamp and as he was very bad went and tried to procure a trap. On returning he found that he was dead, which would be about half an hour after the accident,
I Constable May deposed that ho had examined the body of the deceased and found that bis ribH wero broken on the left Bide of the spine, He believed the spine was also broken. After about 15 minutes retirement the juiy returned a verdict of " accidental death."
