PROSPECTS. Petroleum of a very fine quality hits beon found in a number of places', and the ground, in many portions' of tho Company's leaso, is fairly saturated with it; in the crooks also it is to be eeen flowing freely, clearly showing that wells of this rock Oil exist somewhere in this locality, arid hayo been exuding and running to waste for years hack. It i> anticipated that «hen proper appliances aro brought to bear for boring, Oil will be reached at no great depth. Being in the region of tharmal action, tends also to favour tho opinion of a s;reat Petroleum sourco being situated in this locality—as in Russia it is found m its greatest state of purity and quantity in the region of active volcanic centres—and in Waiotapu the oil actually undergoes a process of distillation in commc; to the surface on account of this thermal action and its mixing freely with Sulphuric Acid. Valuable clays and hematites aro to be' found in large quantities, also iron ores, oxides, Dtid many other valuable ores and pigments-all of whioh will find a ready market. The area for operations consist" of the most valuable portion ot tho famous sight-seeing Waiotapu Valley, and it is situated about 20 miles from Rotorua. The property is approached from Rotorua by a main line of road leading to Strathmore, Wairakei, and Taupo, and another branch lino to Galatea, which latter forms the eastern boundary. It is also well watered by the Waikokomuku, a large fresh water stream, and the flakitikite, a hot water creek, which runs right through the land comp-isod in the lease. Many valuable hot mineral baths with strong curative properties exist on the ground. Samples of tho various minerals are open for inspection at the offices of Messrs L&ery asjd Co,, Willis streot REMARKS FROM VARIOUS AUTHORITIES.
Analysis by Dr Hector, New Zealand Geo. Survey Laboratory. " This is good Petroleum—its spooitin gravity is *8(54, and it yields good commercial kerosene," (Signed) J. Hector. From Gerhard Muollor, Esq., Commissioner Crown Lands. " I haye boen surprised beyond measure to see tho exudations of Petroleum at so many places in your Valley, all of which point to a great reservoir of this Oil somewhere thereabouts," 6.0, MeAuley,Esi]., Rotorua, 19th November, 18P1. " I was shown over only a small portion of the ground, and in nil places found Oil flowing freely-even in the bottom of tho stream—the earth is also full of Oil. I consider tho prospect is an excellent one. The numerous and varied coloured earths ■ nro also very valuable." P. B. Scott, Esq., Auckland, November. 1891. " I have resided in the locality of the Waiotapu Petroleum Springs for the laßtfcur years, and haye had every opportunity of calmly considering the probability of a reservoir existing in that locality, Throughout all this company's ground, oil is to be got on the surface, a few feet below it, and also in the bed ot (he creek, Hundreds of gallons must liavo been finding their way down this stream weekly. 1 considor the very fact, of the ground boing so much disturbed by volcanic aeencies, is very favourable to the supposition of subterranean eayorns oxisting capable of containing large reservoirs of oil, which are often deficient in tegular sandstifao formation, >; Apart from tho petroleum, the value ofthu property iB greatly enhanced by the interesting variety of hematites, acids and days, which are found to purmeate the whole formation, 'A compound which might be termed paraffin butter is also found m quantities.' This is a curious substance, and ia very useful and effective as an antifriction grease. Tho petroleum in its crude state'makes an excellent salve, and is largely used by the natives tor horse soreß, scalds, and wounds. NEWSPAPER EXTENTS.,. Hot Lakes Chronicle, itotorua, 23rd 0ct.,'1891. ■ "Tho importance of this find prompted us to take an interest in the matter by seeing for ourselves what the prospects really are. With this view wo paid a visit to the Valley,' The Oil • is Been floating down a .creek, .and as we walked along our fobtstops caused a more perceptible Bow, -Tho Oil is not confined to the creek alone 1 , but some distance away it is also found; in fact the eround is perfectly saturated .with it : j Tho indications of Oil are preciselysimilar to thoße found at Oil Creek, Petm>
